It’s mid-May, and it’s far too soon to try to predict who will make the roster. But it’s still fun, so in ode to mock draft’s here’s my Redskins 53-Man Roster Prediction v1:
QB (3) – Kirk Cousins, Colt McCoy, Nate Sudfeld
Sudfeld gets on because of the QB situation but he still won’t play. Colt is the heir to the throne as things stand. Wouldn’t be surprised if it is just two.
RB (4) – Rob Kelley, Samaje Perrine, Chris Thompson, Mack Brown
Despite all the recent praise of the rookie, I still believe Kelley is the favorite to start off with the ball and Perrine can eat his way into it. Thompson’s role is clearly defined and is his and his alone. Gruden loves Mack Brown. Matt Jones is gone.
WR (6) – Terrelle Pyroy, Josh Doctson, Jamison Crowder, Brian Quick, Maurice Harris, Robert Davis
I had my roster at 52 and added Davis into this group as the last move, Gruden will get the most weight on those calls and he’ll want an extra offensive guy. The first five seem pretty set at this stage.
TE (4) – Jordan Reed, Vernon Davis, Niles Paul, Jeremy Sprinkle
In an offense with many plays designed for the TE I think it’s wise to take an extra guy with Reed so prone to injury. Paul is a release candidate but still offers something the others don’t, and also remains the only guy on the roster who can fill in at FB for the very few players we require that.
OL (9) – Trent Williams, Shawn Lauvao, Spencer Long, Brandon Scherff, Morgan Moses, Ty Nsekhe, Arie Kouandjio, Vinston Painter, Chase Roullier
The first seven guys here seem locks, and the team likes Painter. Roullier’s versatility should see him aboard, primarily as the backup center.
DI (6) – Jonathan Allen, Terrell McClain, Stacy McGee, Ziggy Hood, Matt Ioannidis, Anthony Lanier
The team seems to really like Lanier, who briefly flashed promise last season. Hood might be the only natural fit at nose right now, though Ioannidis could be being groomed to also fill this role.
ED (4) – Ryan Kerrigan, Preston Smith, Ryan Anderson, Junior Gallette
With Trent Murphy starting the season suspended, it seems a formality these guys are in.
LB (4) – Mason Foster, Zach Brown, Will Compton, Martrell Spaight
I’ve just gone with four here, but with it not being the strongest group there is a chance that rookie Josh Harvey-Clemons could crack the team with an impressive pre-season.
CB (5) – Josh Norman, Bashaud Breeland, Kendall Fuller, Quinton Dunbar, Joshua Holsey
The first four are locks, and I’m going to make the assumption Fabian Moreau begins the season on PUP. After that, there’s an open competition between half a dozen guys, and it seems impossible to know who has the edge at the moment. I’m currently giving the nod to Holsey based on his recent minicamp praise, but this unit is badly lacking in experience so it wouldn’t surprise me to see this change.
S (5) – Su’a Cravens, DJ Swearinger, DeAngelo Hall, Will Blackmon, Montae Nicholson
I think Hall retains his roster spot though it’s not a sure thing. With the recent news he may have to start on PUP, he’s only going to stick around if he takes a pay-cut. With how shaky this position has been I think the team wants options, that’s why I’ve gone with five. Blackmon’s versatility as a good slot corner helps his cause tremendously.
ST (3) – Dustin Hopkins, Tress Way, Nick Sundberg
This speaks for itself, though it would be remiss of the team not to bring in competition for Hopkins after so many misses last season.
Suspended: Trent Murphy
PUP: Fabian Moreau
